What exactly is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

If you are anything like I was before I started seeing a cognitive hypnotherapist, you likely won’t have heard of it before. Cognitive Hypnotherapy includes all the very latest advances in both traditional and modern hypnotherapy, but it is also so much more.

Cognitive hypnotherapy uses a blend of techniques to resolve problems that are holding you back and keeping you stuck. Techniques drawn from Positive Psychology, Gestalt Therapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), to name a few. It can be used for a wide range of different problems including anxiety, low mood, phobias, eating disorders, trauma, smoking cessation, weight loss and more.

Evidence based

Research shows that Cognitive Hypnotherapy is almost twice as effective as other therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and IAPT talking therapies, available on the NHS. It is the only complementary therapy to have this research showing its effectiveness. In the pilot study published in 2015 the NHS therapies were shown to be 42% effective over 4 sessions, while cognitive hypnotherapy was 71% effective over 4 sessions.

So why is it so good?

Cognitive hypnotherapy is what’s called solution focused therapy – this is where we work with the client to help them find and work towards solutions, rather than talking over problems.

In addition to this cognitive hypnotherapy is tailored entirely to the client – I never work with any two clients the same way, and this is based on the fundamental belief that each of us is unique, experiences the world in our own unique way and as a result, have a unique way of doing our problem(s). Therefore, we will each require a unique solution.

How does it work?

When we start I listen to what’s troubling you, to understand what is going on. Once we have a sense of what’s going on we’ll work on resolving what’s holding you back, using tools and techniques tailored to your needs. We’ll focus on helping you achieve the things you want in your life and create the changes you want.

Will you put me in a trance?

A common misconception with hypnosis is that you lose control. Trance is simply a relaxed state, which you can stop at any time by simply opening your eyes. You are always in control and if you are comfortable to use trance, we will. It is one of many techniques we use in cognitive hypnotherapy and allows us to more directly work with what is going on at the unconscious level to get you the results you want.
